On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused the Congress leadership of causing the partition of India in 1947, alleging it was driven by “appeasement politics.”

Addressing a press conference, Adityanath said, “Many of our revolutionaries and freedom fighters were hanged or tortured. But in 1947, just a day before independence, the Congress leadership, in the height of appeasement, agreed to partition the country.”

Recalling the violence that preceded the division, he said, “The riots in undivided India were among the worst atrocities in the world. In Western Pakistan, whether in Karachi or Lahore, systematic campaigns were launched to eliminate Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists. This happened because of the Congress leadership’s appeasement policy.”

Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described Partition as a “painful chapter” and paid tribute to those who endured its “horrific consequences,” emphasising the government’s commitment to strengthening social harmony.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also marked the day by honouring the memory of millions affected, condemning the division of the nation and stating, “The country will never forget the history and pain of Partition.”

Observed annually on August 14, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day pays homage to those who lost their lives or were displaced during the 1947 division of India.
